Assistant Librarian

Summary of Position Responsibilities:
The Assistant Librarian assists the Library Director and the Children’s Librarian in the daily operations of the library and with the cataloging and processing of library materials. The Assistant Librarian must exercise independent judgment and initiative in the planning and provision of library services. As certain library records are not public record, the Assistant Librarian ensures that confidential information is properly maintained.
Description of Supervision/Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Assistant Librarian is selected by the Library Director and recommended to the Board of Library Trustees for appointment. The Assistant Librarian works under the general supervision and direction of the Library Director. The employee is required to work independently, within established policies and procedures and the requirements of federal, state and local law, under the supervision of the Library Director. The employee will assist the Library Director in the supervision of volunteers.
Essential Functions of Job:
- Responsible for circulation of materials at the main circulation desk.
- Provides Reference, Children’s, Adult, Young Adult and other services provided to the general public and special user groups, as necessary
- Manages material processing and entering of materials in the on-line database
- Keeps in communication with C/W MARS regarding materials processing and related policies
- Aides the Director in the supervision of volunteers, including the assignment of duties
- At the request of and with guidance from the Director, performs research, conducts studies, or garners statistics relating to effectiveness of library operations, user needs, new services and technologies, and promotional campaigns
- Responsible for positive community relations and Library promotion
- Performs similar or related work as required or assigned
- Substitutes for Children’s Librarian in his/her absence when necessary
- Substitutes for Library Director in adult services during Director’s absence when necessary
Minimum Competencies:
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and current trends in library science with knowledge of and experience in automated library systems
- Knowledge of the federal, state and local laws, regulations, and policies and procedures applicable to library operations
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with, and establish and maintain cooperative relationships with, Town officials, employees, staff, and volunteers, governmental representatives, and/or the public
- Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of motivation, initiative, and resourcefulness
- Good organizational skills; detail oriented, and able to work independently
- Ability to handle multiple tasks
- Proficiency in the use of word processing and database and computer applications
- Honesty, reliability, patience, discretion, and good judgment essential
Education and Experience/Other Requirements:
- BA degree from an accredited 4-year college preferred
- Minimum of one (1) year working in library setting or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
- Experience working with Evergreen operating system strongly preferred

This job is performed primarily in a municipal public library setting.
While performing the duties of the Assistant Librarian, the employee is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, volunteers, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the Town; operate standard office equipment including computers and keyboards, at efficient speed; and move throughout the library facilities. Lifts/moves objects and books weighing up to 30 pounds; must be able to lift, push and/or pull objects and furniture while setting up activities at the library. Will be required to work outside of normal business hours to accommodate library evening and weekend schedule; will be required to attend night meetings as needed.
