HASTON LIBRARY (NORTH BROOKFIELD) SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The Haston Public Library in North Brookfield is gearing up for another fun summer of activities around its Summer Reading Program, “Fizz, Boom, Read!” Children in grades pre-K to Grade 6 who register for the program will receive reading logs, bookmarks and certificates of achievement, as well as the chance to win prizes as levels of progress are reached. Children do not have to be reading on their own in order to participate.
The program runs for six weeks from July 7 through August 16. Weekly activities will include “Lego Club” every Tuesday from 2:00-4:00. Girls and boys of all ages are invited to build a Lego creation on the theme of the week. Popcorn will be served. Each Thursday from 2:00-4:00 enjoy “Drop-in Crafts.” Work independently on a selection of simple crafts, using a variety of materials.
On Wednesday, July 9, at 3:00 p.m. “Ed the Wizard” will kick off the summer fun as he conjures up his special brand of magic with a strong emphasis on reading. Children of all ages (grown-ups, too!) will be captivated by his fabulous feats of prestidigitation, brought to you courtesy of a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Other special events include two programs provided by the Coordinated Family and Community Engagement Grant. On Tuesday, July 15, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. it’s “Read, Play, Build!” Diane Nichols will read a story to children aged 2-8 about the joy of building and then set them loose with a variety of materials to create their own structures. On Tuesday, August 5, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Diane Nichols gets kids aged 2-5 involved in an “Icky Sticky” situation: lots of tactile fun with playdoh, pompom balls, beans, packing peanuts, rice, etc.
